Northwestern opened the year with consecutive wins before falling to Pittsburgh by one in game three. The Wildcats then took out Quincy, Michigan State, Indiana and Ohio State in succession. Since then it’s been three straight losses to Iowa, Michigan and Illinois.
In the 81-56 loss to the Illini on Thursday, Northwestern’s top scorer was Robbie Beran with 11 points, four assists and five rebounds. Pete Nance added nine points with two assists and three boards, and Ryan Young scored nine with five rebounds and two assists.
Over on the Ohio State side, they began their season with five straight wins over Illinois State, UMass Lowell, Morehead State, Notre Dame and Cleveland State. After a loss to Purdue and wins over UCLA and Rutgers, the Buckeyes are 2-2 in their last four, most recently taking out Rutgers 79-68 on Saturday.
In the win over the Knights, Ohio State’s Duane Washington posted 17 points with one rebound and one assist. EJ Liddell added 15 points with six boards and two assists, and Justice Sueing doubled up with 12 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State is 35-15-2 ATS in their last 52 Wednesday games and 20-7 ATS in their last 27 home games. The Buckeyes are 1-4-1 ATS in their last six after a straight-up win and 1-5 ATS in their last six after a straight-up win.
Meanwhile, the Wildcats are 1-4 ATS in their last five road games and 2-5 ATS in their last seven Wednesday games. The under is 6-2 in Northwestern’s last eight Wednesday games and the over is 5-1 in their last six after an ATS loss.
PICK: I’m going to take Ohio State here. The Wildcats are coming off a bizarre game versus Illinois in which they had a 43-28 lead going into the half. Northwestern was outscored 53-13 the rest of the way in an eventual blowout loss. The last time these teams played, the Wildcats shot 48.3 percent from the field and won 71-70 despite getting out-rebounded 40-26. I think Ohio State will have a better game plan for this one and bang out a cover. Should be another great game.
