The Pepperdine Waves and the Gonzaga Bulldogs meet in college basketball action from McCarthey Athletic Center on Thursday night.
The Pepperdine Waves will look to bounce back after falling to 4-5 on the year following a 79-51 loss to CSU-Bakersfield in their last matchup. Colbey Ross leads the Waves in scoring and assists with 19 PPG and 7.2 APG while Kessler Edwards is 2nd in scoring and tops in rebounding with 17.2 PPG and 5.9 RPG and Kendall Munson has 12.5 PPG to make up the trio of double-digit scorers for Pepperdine heading into Wednesday’s matchup with Gonzaga. As a team, Pepperdine is averaging 77.9 PPG on 47.1% shooting from the field, 29.9% from 3-point range and 81.4% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 73.6 PPG on 42.9% shooting from the field and 26.9% from 3-point range this season.
The Gonzaga Bulldogs will look to remain unbeaten after improving to 12-0 on the year after picking up a 116-88 win over Portland last time out. Corey Kispert leads the ‘Zags in scoring with 21.1 PPG while Drew Timme is 2nd in scoring with 18.5 PPG along with 6.8 RPG. Jalen Suggs has 13.8 PPG with a team-high 5.1 APG in addition to 5.1 RPG. Josh Ayayi leads the Bulldogs in rebounding while also chipping in 11.8 PPG and 4.3 APG to go along with his 8.1 RPG and Andrew Nembhard has 10 PPG with 4.5 APG to make up the scoring in double figures for Gonzaga up to this point in the year. As a team, Gonzaga is averaging 96.1 PPG on 55.6% shooting from the field, 33.7% from 3-point range and 71.8% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 73.4 PPG on 42.7% shooting from the field and 34.5% from 3-point range this season.
Pepperdine is 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 road games and 3-0-1 ATS in their last 4 road games against a team with a winning home record while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. Gonzaga is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games against a team with a losing record and 3-0-1 ATS in their last 4 Thursday games while the over is 22-8 in their last 30 home games. The underdog is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
Maybe the Waves used their extended break to think about their poor form heading into the Holidays, where the Waves didn’t cover their last three lined games, with all of those losses coming as favorites. This is also a lot of points to give up with a Gonzaga team that doesn’t play much defense. However, If Cal State-Bakersfield can hold Pepperdine to 51 points and win by 28 points, I shudder to think what Gonzaga and that high-octane offense will do. I think this could be a game where Gonzaga names their number and it’s a shame for a Pepperdine team that showed so much promise coming into the year. I’ll lay the points with the Bulldogs in a rout.
