Charleston Southern began the year on a three-game losing skid to NC State, Eastern Kentucky and NC A&T. The Buccaneers’ only win came December 8 versus Carver, then it was six more losses. Those defeats come to Hampton, Winthrop and Radford in pairs.
In the Sunday loss to Radford, Charleston Southern’s Phlandrous Fleming was the only player in double-figures with 18 points, four assists and four rebounds. Melvin Edwards managed to chip in nine points with three rebounds in 24 minutes for the Buccaneers as well.
Over on the UNC Asheville side, they came out of the gate at 0-2 before three straight wins heading into December. The Bulldogs then lost a pair to Chattanooga and Marshall before splitting four games with Longwood and Hampton going into the new calendar year.
In Sunday’s 85-77 win over Hampton, UNC Asheville’s Jamon Battle led the team on 18 points with seven rebounds and one assist. LJ Thorpe added 17 points with four rebounds and two assists, and Trent Stephney had 16 points with four rebounds and two assists.
The Bulldogs are 6-1 ATS in their last seven home games and 4-10 ATS in their last 14 after an ATS win. UNC Asheville is 1-4 ATS in their last five Thursday games and the under is 4-1 in their last five after an ATS win.
Meanwhile, the Buccaneers are 0-7 ATS in their last seven road games and 8-20 ATS in their last 28 overall. Charleston Southern is 0-6 ATS in their last six Thursday games and 1-6 ATS in their last seven after a straight-up loss.
PICK: I’m going to stick with UNC Asheville here. The Bulldogs have certainly had an up-and-down season so far, but they’ve notched some decent offensive performances lately. UNC Asheville has scored 71 or more in three of their last four games and seven of 11 overall. Charleston Southern has cracked the 70-point mark just twice this season. I like UNC Asheville’s offense enough to trust them on a cover here.
