The Long Island Sharks and the Wagner Seahawks meet in college basketball action from Spiro Sports Center on Thursday night.
The Long Island Sharks will look to build off of a 71-58 win over Saint Francis last time out. Ty Flowers leads the Sharks in scoring and is 2nd in rebounding with 18.5 PPG and 8.8 RPG while Jermaine Jackson Jr. is 2nd in scoring with 17.7 PPG to go along with 3 APG this season. Eral Penn has 14 PPG as well as a team-high 9.3 RPG to make up the trio of double-digit scorers for LIU coming into Thursday’s matchup with Wagner while Tre Wood has 9.3 PPG to go along with 3.5 APG this season. As a team, Long Island is averaging 74 PPG on 40.5% shooting from the field, 23.3% from 3-point range and 64.3% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 68.8 PPG on 40.7% shooting from the field and 32.3% from 3-point range this season.
The Wagner Seahawks will look to bounce back from an 86-85 overtime loss to Sacred Heart last time out. Elijah Ford leads Wagner in scoring with 20.8 PPG to go along with 6.4 RPG while Alex Morales is 2nd in scoring with 14.4 PPG but leads the Seahawks in rebounding and assists with 8.4 RPG and 4.8 APG this season. Elijah Allen has 11.2 PPG to make up the trio of double-digit scorers for Wagner up to this point in the year while Will Martinez has 7 RPG and 4 APG as well this season. As a team, Wagner is averaging 68.2 PPG on 40.4% shooting from the field, 27.5% from 3-point range and 60% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 73 PPG on 43.4% shooting from the field and 33.3% from 3-point range this season.
Long Island is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games against a team with a losing record and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games against a team with a winning percentage below .400 while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 Thursday games. Wagner is 16-35 ATS in their last 51 games overall and 6-21 ATS in their last 27 games against a team with a winning record while the under is 8-2 in their last 10 home games.
The issue with Wagner is that the Seahawks are hard to trust because they’ve been beaten up as an underdog this season and while the Seahawks split their results as favorites, the last game against Sacred Heart saw Wagner lose outright as a 7-point favorite. Long Island has at least been fairly consistent with their scoring and have done a good job against the number so far this season. I’ll back Long Island in this spot.
