The Old Dominion Monarchs and the Rice Owls meet Friday in college basketball action from Tudor Fieldhouse.
Old Dominion enters this one at 7-3 so far. The Monarchs have won three straight games over FIU and Florida Atlantic. As for Rice, they’re 9-3 this season. The Owls are 4-1 in their last five games and coming off a win over UTEP. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
Old Dominion began the season at 2-2 with losses to Maryland and VCU alongside wins over William & Mary and Norfolk State. After wins over Northeastern and VA Wesleyan, the Monarchs then took a loss to FIU. Since then it’s been three wins over FIU and Florida Atlantic (twice).
In Saturday’s win over the Owls, Old Dominion’s Anthony Oliver topped the team on 17 points with four rebounds. Joe Reece put up 14 points with nine boards, and Malik Curry finished on 10 points with two assists and three rebounds in 32 minutes on the floor.
Over on the Rice side, their year kicked off with a four-game win streak before a loss to New Mexico. Rice then beat Houston Baptist and fell to Sam Houston; since then it’s been a 4-1 stretch for Rice. The Owls have beaten New Orleans, UTSA and UTEP in that time.
In Saturday’s 71-68 win over UTEP, Rice’s Travis Evee led the team with 21 points, six rebounds and three assists. Max Fiedler added 19 points with 13 rebounds and two assists, while three other Owls players added eight points apiece.
Rice is 4-1 ATS in their last five games overall and 5-2 ATS in their last seven home games versus a team with a losing road record. The under is 7-3 in the Owls’ last 10 overall and the over is 4-1-1 in their last six versus a team with a winning straight-up record.
Meanwhile, the Monarchs are 2-6 ATS in their last eight road games and 0-4 ATS in their last four after an ATS win. Old Dominion is 1-6 ATS in their last seven Friday games and the over is 5-2 in their last seven road games.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Rice. The Owls have been playing well over their last five games, with the only blemish being a 101-89 loss to UTEP on January 8. Otherwise, Rice has hit 71 or more points in each game. Old Dominion has a few good scoring outings to their credit lately, but they’ve also been at 67 or below in two of their last four. Rice seems a better play cover-wise here.
