The Appalachian State Mountaineers and the South Alabama Jaguars meet Friday in college basketball action from Mitchell Center.
Appalachian State enters this one at 9-4 so far. The Mountaineers have won three straight games over Troy and GA Southern. As for South Alabama, they’re 7-6 this year. The Jaguars have lost three in a row to GA Southern and Coastal Carolina. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
App State entered the year on a solid 4-1 run before losing big to Tennessee on December 15. Since then it’s been a pair of wins over Greensboro and CIU before losses to Auburn and Troy, then three straight victories for the Mountaineers. They took out Troy 90-59 then beat Georgia Southern twice.
In Saturday’s 77-71 win over the Eagles, Appalachian State’s Donovan Gregory posted 19 points with four rebounds and three assists. Adrian Delph added 17 points and two boards, while James Lewis doubled up on 14 points and 11 rebounds in 29 minutes of action.
Over on the South Alabama side, they started out pretty well themselves also, notching a 6-2 record over their first eight games with losses to JSU and Auburn as the only blemishes. Since then the Jags are just 1-4 falling to Alabama A&M, Georgia Southern and Coastal Carolina (twice) in that time.
In Saturday’s 83-69 loss to the Chanticleers, South Alabama’s Michael Flowers topped the team on 29 points with four assists and three rebounds. Tyreke Locure pitched in 11 points with five boards and two assists, and Sam Iorio had 10 points with five rebounds.
South Alabama is 2-5 ATS in their last seven home games and 1-5 ATS in their last six games overall. The over is 5-2 in the Jags’ last seven Friday games and 6-2 in their last eight games overall.
Meanwhile, App State is 11-5-2 ATS in their last 18 road games and 6-2-1 ATS in their last nine overall. The Mountaineers are 15-31-1 ATS in their last 47 after an ATS win and the under is 4-0 in their last four Friday games.
PICK: I’m going to take a shot on South Alabama here. Granted, the Jaguars’ recent games don’t inspire much confidence, as they’re 1-4 in their last five outings. South Alabama has also been below 70 points in each of their last three as well. That said, the Jags do have a few good offensive outings under their belt this year, and if they can get off to a good start I can see South Alabama eking into a cover in this one.
