Dixie State opened up their year with three wins over North Dakota, St. Katherine and Denver. The Trailblazers are 1-3 since then (with a handful of cancelled games), with a win over Bethesda mixed in alongside losses to Southern Utah, Gonzaga and New Mexico.
In the 72-63 loss to New Mexico back on January 13, Dixie State’s top scorer was Andre Mulibea, who came off the bench for 15 points, four rebounds and two assists on 6-of-12 shooting in 19 minutes. Frank Staine chipped in 13 points on 4-of-14 shooting as well.
Over on the UTRGV side, they started out at 3-1 with wins over UTSA, Texas A&M-CC and Our Lady of the Lake. since then it’s been a 3-2 run for the Vaqueros. They’ve lost to Texas A&M and Sam Houston while otherwise beating Texas A&M-CC, Texas A&M International and St. Mary’s Texas.
In the 96-67 win over the Rattlers, Texas-Rio Grande Valley’s LaQuan Butler led the way on 20 points with four rebounds and two assists. Sean Rhea posted 13 points and six boards, and Marek Nelson put up 12 points with three assists and two rebounds.
Texas-Rio Grande Valley is 1-4 ATS in their last five after a straight-up win and 1-3-1 ATS in their last five after scoring more than 90 points in their previous game. The Vaqueros are 5-2 ATS in their last seven versus a team with a winning straight-up record as well.
The under is 4-1 in the Vaqueros’ last five overall and the over is 10-4 in their last 14 as a home favorite. The over is 6-2 in their last eight Friday games and 5-2 in their last seven after a straight-up win.
PICK: I’m going to take a shot on Dixie State here. This may be one to stay away from however, as the Trailblazers have only played one game since December 29. That said, UTRGV has puffed up their record versus a few not-so-good teams this season. Dixie State falls into that category somewhat, but they’ve managed to stand tall in most of their games this year. I like the Trailblazers to hang around in this one and bang out a cover.
