Marshall enters this matchup at 7-2 this season. The Herd are 3-1 in their last four games and took out Louisiana Tech in their last outing. As for Western Kentucky, they’re 9-4 so far. The Hilltoppers lost by five to Louisiana Tech in their last game. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
Marshall began their year with four straight wins, taking out Arkansas State, Wright State, Charleston and Ohio. The Herd went 2-2 in the next four with losses to Toledo and LA Tech beside wins over Robert Morris and UNC Asheville. Marshall beat LA Tech in their last outing on January 2.
In the 80-73 victory over the Bulldogs, Marshall’s Taevion Kinsey posted 20 points with eight rebounds and five assists, and Mikel Beyers put up 17 points with five rebounds in 21 minutes. Andrew Taylor also logged a double-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists.
Over on the Western Kentucky side, they started out the season at 2-2 before hitting a six-game win streak over MS Valley State, Gardner-Webb, Rhode Island, Alabama, Tennessee Tech and Charlotte. After a loss Charlotte, the Hilltoppers split a pair of games versus Louisiana Tech in their last pair.
In Saturday’s 63-58 loss to the Bulldogs, Western Kentucky’s Taevion Hollingsworth managed 16 points with six rebounds and two assists. Charles Bassey doubled up for the Hilltoppers there, providing 14 points with 13 boards and one assist in 32 minutes on the court.
The Hilltoppers are 1-5 ATS in their last six home games and 0-6 ATS in their last six Friday games. Western Kentucky is 0-4 ATS in their last four overall and the under is 5-2 in the last seven overall.
Meanwhile, the Herd are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 Friday games and 4-1 ATS in their last five road games. Marshall is 4-1 ATS in their last five versus a team with a winning percentage above .600 and the under is 4-1 in their last five versus a team with a winning straight-up record.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Marshall. This should be a pretty interesting matchup, though. Both teams are coming off two split games versus Louisiana Tech; Marshall went 75-68 (loss) and 80-73 (win), while the Hilltoppers were 66-64 (win) and 63-58 (loss), so all four games were pretty tight. Western Kentucky has been a little lax in scoring lately with 67 or fewer in three of their last four. If Marshall can hit some early shots here I like the Herd on a cover.
