The San Jose State Spartans and the San Diego State Aztecs meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Viejas Arena.
San Jose State is sitting at 5-12 so far. The Spartans had a three-game win streak stopped by San Diego State on Monday. As for the Aztecs, they’re 14-4 this year. San Jose State won their opener but then hit a 1-11 skid with losses to Saint Mary’s, Cal Poly, Utah State, Boise State, Fresno State, Colorado State and New Mexico. After a rematch win over the Lobos, the Spartans took two more over Air Force before the loss to the Aztecs on Monday.
In the Monday loss 85-54, San Jose State’s Jalen Dalcourt led the team on 13 points with two rebounds and one assist. Also in double-figures was Trey Smith on 12 points with three rebounds and two assists.
Over on the San Diego State Side, their campaign started out at 6-2 including losses to Colorado State and BYU. The Aztecs then won three more, lost a pair to Utah State then beat Air Force, Wyoming and San Jose State in their last five.
In the big win on Monday, San Diego State was led by Jordan Schakel with 23 points and three assists. Both Nathan Mensah and Joshua Tomaic notched 12 points apiece, combining for 16 rebounds as well.
The Aztecs are 6-1 ATS in their last seven Wednesday games and 4-0 ATS in their last four after a straight-up win. San Diego State is 5-0 ATS in their last five overall and the over is 6-2 in their last eight after an ATS win.
Meanwhile, the Spartans are 1-4 ATS in their last five Wednesday games and 2-10 ATS in their last 12 games after an ATS loss. San Jose State is 16-37-1 ATS in their last 54 road games and 4-14 ATS in their last 18 overall.
PICK: I’m sticking with San Diego State here. Oddly enough, the Aztecs didn’t shoot all that well in their big win on Monday, with just 36.6 percent from the floor. Hoisting up 71 field goal attempts always helps on the scoreboard though. The Aztecs had a big edge in rebounding 54-30 as well. This should be a cleaner game with better shooting looks, and I still like San Diego State on a cover.
