The Alabama State Hornets and the Southern Jaguars meet Monday in college basketball action from FG Clark Center.
Alabama State enters this one at 4-8 so far. The Hornets are 2-1 in their last three and coming off a win over Alabama A&M. As for Southern, they’re sitting at 5-8 so far. Alabama State hasn’t been able to sustain wins this year, and they’re yet to take victories in consecutive games. The Hornets started out at 2-7 with wins over MS Valley State and Southern. Since then it’s been a 2-1 stretch with wins over AR-Pine Bluff and Alabama A&M.
In the 72-58 win over Alabama A&M, Alabama State’s Brandon Battle put up 23 points with four rebounds and four assists. Kenny Strawbridge managed 18 points with seven boards, and DJ Heath had 17 points with four assists and three rebounds.
Over on the Southern side, they began the year at 0-4 before a three-game win streak in mid-January. Since then the Jaguars are 2-4 with losses to Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Grambling and Jackson State alongside wins over Alcorn State and AR-Pine Bluff.
In the 73-71 OT win over AR-Pine Bluff, Southern’s top scorers were Samkelo Cele and Harrison Henderson with 19 points apiece and a combined two assists with eight rebounds. Jayden Saddler added 11 points with four rebounds as well.
The Jaguars are 11-3 ATS in their last 14 home games and 1-5 ATS in the last six overall. Southern is 1-5 ATS in their last six as a favorite and the under is 21-5 in their last 26 Monday games.
Meanwhile, the Hornets are 11-4 ATS in their last 15 road games and 4-9 ATS in their last 13 versus a team with a losing straight-up record. The under is 9-3 in the Hornets’ last 12 Monday games and 20-8 in their last 28 overall.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Southern here. The last time these teams met up, Alabama Stat powered out a 66-64 win thanks to a 45-36 edge in the second half. Southern shot 45.1 percent in that game and had an assists edge 10-6, but also coughed up 17 turnovers. If the Jaguars can clean up their act in this one I think the cover is theirs for the taking.
