The Cal Poly Mustangs and the UC Irvine Anteaters meet Thursday in college basketball action from Mandalay Bay Events Center.
Coming into this Big West Tournament matchup, Cal Poly sits at 4-19 so far. The Mustangs stopped a nine-game skid with a tourney win over CSU Fullerton in their last outing. As for UC Irvine, they’re 16-8 this year. The Anteaters have won four straight over UC San Diego and Long Beach State. Cal Poly hasn’t had a lot of luck this year, to put it mildly. The Mustangs started out the year at 2-2 but it only got worse from there, and they’re yet to win consecutive games. Cal Poly finally stopped their recent nine-game skid with a win over Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday.
In the 87-82 tourney win over the Titans, Cal Poly’s Colby Rogers led the team on 21 points with six rebounds and three assists. Alimamy Koroma had a solid line there as well with 18 points, four rebounds and one assist in 16 minutes on the floor.
Over on the UC Irvine side, their year began at 2-4 before a seven-game win streak in January. The Anteaters lost four of their next seven games, but since have notched four straight wins over UC San Diego and Long Beach State.
In the 73-58 win over Long Beach State on Saturday, UC Irvine’s Dawson Baker put up 14 points with two assists and three rebounds. Dwayne Davis added 10 points with three assists, and Collin Welp put up nine points with nine rebounds.
The Anteaters are 1-3-1 ATS in their last five after an ATS win and 2-5-1 ATS in their last eight after a straight-up win. UC Irvine is 8-2 ATS in their last 10 Thursday games and the under is 4-1 in their last five overall.
Meanwhile, the Mustangs are 1-6 ATS in their last seven neutral-site games and 4-1 ATS in their last five after an ATS win. Cal Poly is 4-0 ATS in their last four overall and the over is 5-1 in their last six Thursday games.
PICK: I’m going to stick with UC Irvine. Despite the February struggles, the Anteaters have played well over their last four games, with 71 or more points in each. The last time these teams met up was a pair of victories for UC Irvine 68-49 and 67-44. This rematch may be a little more competitive but I still like the Anteaters better on a cover.
