The North Carolina A&T Aggies and the UNC Greensboro Spartans meet Tuesday in college basketball action from Greensboro Coliseum. This will be the opener of the season for both teams. North Carolina A&T is coming off a 11-10 record and a division championship last season. As for UNC Greensboro, they finished 21-9 and won the SoCon Tournament. North Carolina A&T went 11-10 overall in the 2020-21 season, boasting a nice 7-1 record in MEAC play. That effort left the Aggies in first place in the Southern division of the conference. Unfortunately, North Carolina A&T ran into some cancellation issues at the end of the year and didn’t get to compete in the MEAC Tournament.

The Aggies’ schedule was limited last year, but the good news is that the team finished on a nice run. North Carolina A&T won eight of their final nine games after starting out the season a dismal 3-9. Three of those wins (and the lone loss) came to Florida A&M.

Over on the UNC Greensboro side, they’re coming off a solid regular season at 21-9 overall and 13-5 in SoCon play. The Spartans eked out a first-place conference standings finish over Wofford, and took the conference tourney with wins over the Citadel, East Tennessee State and Mercer.

The Spartans earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament, where they matched up against Florida State. UNC Greensboro ended up losing that one 64-54, however. Still, it was a nice showing for head coach Wes Miller in his final year with the team.

PICK: I think I’m going to take a stab on UNC Greensboro, but probably staying away for the time being. North Carolina A&T is notable this year for moving out of the MEAC and into the Big South. It may prove to be a difficult transition, but if the Aggies can sustain their great turnover rate from last year it shouldn’t be too jarring.

As for the Spartans, they’ll be interesting to watch as well under new head coach Mike Jones. He’ll have to replace Isaiah Miller but the team does return three of five starters. I like UNC Greensboro to have another successful year, starting in this opener.
