The Northern Illinois Huskies and the Indiana Hoosiers meet Friday in college basketball action from Bloomington Assembly Hall. Northern Illinois managed a seven-point win over Washington in their opener to start the season on a high note. As for Indiana, they were able to beat Eastern Michigan by six in their first game of the year. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.

Northern Illinois is coming off a bad season in 2020-21, going 3-16 overall and 2-12 in MAC play. The Huskies finished in the basement of the conference standings. Northern Illinois had a six-game losing streak late in the year, but won their final matchup versus Central Michigan.

The Huskies outscored Washington 36-27 in the first half of their opener on Tuesday, ultimately powering out a 71-64 win. Leading the way in scoring was Trendon Hankerson with 28 points and seven boards, while Anthony Crump doubled up on 11 points, 11 rebounds and six assists.

Over on the Indiana side, they put up a 12-15 overall record last year and went 7-12 in a competitive Big Ten. The Hoosiers finished above only four teams in the standings and finished the year on a six-game losing skid ending with Rutgers in the conference tourney.

The Hoosiers pulled off a solid 68-62 victory over Eastern Michigan in their opener this year, but let the Eagles back into it with a 43-32 deficit in the second half. Trayce Jackson-Davis led the team with 21 points and 14 rebounds, and Xavier Johnson notched 14 points as well.

Indiana is 2-6 ATS in their last eight at home and 0-7 ATS in their last seven overall. The Hoosiers are 1-4 ATS in their last five as a home favorite.

Meanwhile, the Huskies are 7-18-1 ATS in their last 26 overall and 0-5-1 ATS in their last six after an ATS win. NIU is 6-21 ATS in their last 27 as a favorite.

PICK: I’m going to try Northern Illinois here. The Huskies had a solid all-around game in their open versus Washington, holding the opposition to just 26.7 percent from the field and 16.7 percent (3-of-18) from 3-point range. NIU was drilled on the boards 51-37 but came up with a nice 14 blocks.

As for Indiana, they looked great in the first half against Eastern Michigan and held the Eagles to just 19 points. The Hoosiers would finish with 16.7 percent from 3-point range (4-of-24) and a minuscule 43-42 rebound edge, however. NIU will probably put up a good fight here, so Indiana is going to have to respond well if they want to keep the Huskies at bay.
