The Western Michigan Broncos and the Michigan State Spartans meet Friday in college basketball action from Breslin Center. Western Michigan is fresh off a game versus Hope College. In that one the Broncos took a blowout win. As for Michigan State, they lost to Kansas in their opener on Tuesday. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.

Western Michigan posted a 5-16 overall record in 2020-21, going 4-12 in MAC play. The Broncos finished just three slots above last place in the conference. Western Michigan would lose five of their final six games of the season as well.

In Wednesday’s season opener versus Hope College, the Broncos held a 39-20 edge at halftime and cruised to a 76-58 win. Leading scorer Lamar Norman finished with 23 points, three rebounds and three assists.

Over on the Michigan State side, they put up a 15-13 mark overall last year with a 9-11 record in the Big Ten. The Spartans finished ahead of five other teams in the standings. Michigan State earned a First Four spot in the NCAA Tournament, but lost 86-80 in OT to UCLA.

The Spartans got a tough draw in their first game of the 2021-22 season, facing off against Kansas on Tuesday. Michigan State would end up falling 87-74 in that one. AJ Hoggard was the top team scorer with 17 points, four assists and two boards.

Michigan State is 5-12 ATS in the last 17 after an ATS loss and 5-11 ATS in their last 16 after a straight-up loss. The Spartans are 7-19 ATS in their last 26 overall.

Meanwhile, the Broncos are 2-5 ATS in their last seven Friday games and 1-5 ATS in their last six games after a straight-up win.

PICK: I’m probably going to stick with Michigan State. It’s tough to judge the Spartans off just one game against a big-time opponent, but overall the stats look pretty good. Michigan State shot 46.0 percent from the field with 37 rebounds and 12 team assists. There are a few things to clean up however, like the 16 turnovers and 56.3 percent on free throws. All of that said, the Spartans should have more than enough firepower to cover here if all goes well.
