The Virginia Tech Hokies and the Navy Midshipmen meet Friday in college basketball action from Navy Alumni Hall. Virginia Tech is 1-0 on the young season following a blowout win over Maine this week. As for Navy, they won their first game as well. The Midshipmen took out Virginia in an upset. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.

Virginia Tech finished last season with a 15-7 overall record and a 9-4 mark in a competitive ACC. The Hokies finished third in the conference standings, but lost in the ACC Tournament to North Carolina and in the NCAA Tournament to Florida.

Virginia Tech put up a good effort against Maine in their first game this week, surging ahead 46-22 at the break on the way to an 82-47 win. Both Justyn Mutts and David N’Guessan had 15 points apiece, and Nahiem Alleyne added 13 points with seven boards.

Over on the Navy side, they’re coming off a good run last year at 15-3 overall and 12-1 in the Patriot League. The Midshipmen finished atop the South Division of the conference, but ultimately fell 76-68 to Loyola in the first round of the conference tourney.

Navy’s first game of the 2021-22 season against Virginia was a rousing success. The Midshipmen turned a 42-35 halftime edge into a 66-58 shutout win. The team’s leading scorer was John Carter with 19 points, five rebounds and two assists.

Navy is 13-3 ATS in their last 16 as a favorite and 5-1 ATS in their last six as an underdog. The Midshipmen are 2-5 ATS in the last seven Friday games.

Meanwhile, the Hokies are 2-5 ATS in their last seven overall and 1-5 ATS in their last six road games. VT is 9-2 ATS in the last 11 Friday games as well.

PICK: I’m going to stick with Navy. The Midshipmen controlled Virginia very well in their opener, shooting 45.3 percent from the field with a 35-30 rebound advantage and a 14-11 edge on assists. Navy committed 17 total turnovers, but their 52.4 percent rate on 3-pointers (11-of-21) helped keep the team in the lead.

As for Virginia Tech, they shot 53 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from 3-point land in their opener win, but benefited from Maine’s 19 turnovers and 32.8 percent shooting. This will be a much stouter test (and should be a great game) so it’ll be interesting to see how the Hokies respond.
