The Brown Bears and the North Carolina Tar Heels meet Friday in college basketball action from Dean Smith Center. Brown has a win in the bag this year, prevailing in a blowout over Salve Regina. As for the Tar Heels, they won their opener as well, beating Loyola-MD by 15 points. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.

Brown had a long hiatus before getting back to the court. The Bears (and the rest of the Ivy League) didn’t play last year. In their last full season of action, Brown put up a 15-12 overall record and an 8-6 conference mark for a fifth-place finish.

The Bears got a big win during a warmup opener versus Salve Regina. After a 48-26 halftime run, Brown would prevail 89-59 in a blowout. Leading scorer David Mitchell finished with 13 points, four rebounds, one assist and one block.

Over on the North Carolina side, they put up an 18-11 overall record in 2020-21 with a 10-6 run in ACC matchups. That left the Tar Heels in sixth place in the standings. UNC made it to the semifinals of the conference tournament, then lost to Wisconsin in the First Round of the NCAA tourney.

The Tar Heels jumped out to a 45-31 edge over Loyola-MD in their opener this year, cruising to an 83-67 win. Caleb Love topped the team with 22 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals. Brady Manek added 20 points and five rebounds for North Carolina as well.

UNC is 5-0 ATS in their last five after an ATS loss and 1-5-1 ATS in their last seven Friday games. The over is 9-2 in the Tar Heels’ last 11 at home.

Meanwhile, the Bears are 4-1 ATS in their last five road games versus a team with a winning home record and 3-8-1 ATS in their last 12 after a straight-up win.

PICK: I’m probably sticking with North Carolina, but staying away. It’s hard to evaluate Brown after such a long court absence and a cupcake opener matchup, but to their credit the team took care of business. The Bears shot 48 percent from the field in their opener win, hauling in 40 rebounds and 22 assists along the way.

As for UNC, they rolled right along against Loyola-MD, shooting 52.7 percent with 37 rebounds and 15 team assists. I like the Tar Heels to keep the momentum going and put up a nice cover performance here.
