The Idaho State Bengals and the Pepperdine Waves meet Friday in college basketball action from Firestone Fieldhouse. Idaho State managed a victory in their first action of the year, dispatching Eastern Oregon by 21 points. As for Pepperdine, they took a 19-point loss to Rice in their opener. Idaho State posted a 13-11 overall record in 2020-21, going 8-6 in Big Sky play. The Bengals landed in fifth place in the conference standings. After a 1-3 finish to the season, Idaho State lost to Montana State in their first game of the Big Sky Tournament.
Idaho State didn’t have too many issues against Eastern Oregon in their opener this week, and jumped out to a 43-29 halftime edge on the way to an 82-61 victory. The team’s top scorer was Tarik Cool with 16 points, four rebounds and two assists.
Over on the Pepperdine side, they went 15-12 overall last season and 7-6 in WCC play. the Waves landed in fourth place and lost to BYU in the conference tourney. Pepperdine got an invite to the CBI, where they beat Coastal Carolina for the tournament championship.
Pepperdine had some trouble scoring against Rice in their opener this week despite a competitive first half. The Waves held a 46-28 deficit after the break and lost 82-63. Leading scorer Houston Mallette finished on 18 points, five assists and six boards.
Pepperdine is 4-1 ATS in their last five at home and 7-1 ATS in the last eight after a straight-up loss. The Waves are 6-1 ATS in their last seven overall.
Meanwhile, the Bengals are 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 road games and the under is 8-1 in their last nine overall. The under is 4-0 in Idaho State’s last four road games.
PICK: I’m going with Idaho State, but probably not messing with this one. The Bengals shot a solid 49.1 percent from the field in their opener win, out-rebounding Eastern Oregon 35-28. It was something of a tepid effort otherwise, but Idaho State did what they were supposed to do—win big.
As for Pepperdine, their opener game was pretty flat. The Waves shot just 35.4 percent from the field against Rice, and were outperformed in rebounding 43-36 and assists 21-15. Pepperdine should get it together and play better here, but I think the Bengals can get in on a cover.
