The Georgia Southern Eagles and the South Florida Bulls meet Saturday in college basketball action from Yuengling Center. Georgia Southern is coming off an 11-point win over Ball State in their opener this week. As for USF, they beat Bethune-Cookman by 21 in their first game of the year. Georgia Southern managed a .500 record last year, going 13-13 overall and 7-9 in Sun Belt play. That result left the Eagles one spot out of the basement in the East Division. Georgia Southern’s season came to an end with a loss to Arkansas State in the Sun Belt Tournament.
The Eagles played Ball State in their 2021-22 opener this week, ultimately taking an 82-71 victory. Gedi Juozapaitis was the lead scorer with 15 points, three assists and two rebounds. Kamari Brown added 12 points with six boards and four assists.
Over on the South Florida side, they went 9-13 overall last year with a 4-10 mark in ACC play. The Bulls finished ahead of only three teams in the conference standings. USF beat Temple in the AAC Tournament before a season-ending loss to Wichita State.
South Florida scored 46 points in the second half versus Bethune-Cookman, propelling the team to a 75-54 win. Russel Tchewa led the way on 16 points with four rebounds and one assist, and Jamar Chaplin had 13 points with eight boards.
USF is 3-8 ATS in the last 11 at home and 2-8 ATS in their last 10 after an ATS loss. The Bulls are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 after a straight-up win.
Meanwhile, the Eagles are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 road games and 1-4 ATS in their last five after an ATS win. Georgia Southern is 4-1 ATS in their last five on Saturday.
PICK: I’m going to try South Florida. The Bulls started out a little tepid in their opener, going into halftime with a 29-29 tie. USF would ultimately shoot 51.9 percent from the field in the win, collecting 35 rebounds and 15 team assists along the way. The 3-point shooting (23.1 percent) isn’t quite there yet, though.
As for Georgia Southern, they had six different players in double-figures during the Ball State game, and the team posted a great second half as well. This should be a fun and competitive matchup most of the way; I think USF can manage a cover, though.
