The Wagner Seahawks and the VCU Rams meet Saturday in college basketball action from Seigel Center. Wagner is coming off a big win in their opener this week, beating Hartford by 18 points. As for the Rams, they managed to eke out a two-point victory over Saint Peter’s in their first game. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.

Wagner put up a 13-7 record overall last year with a 13-5 run in the NEC to finish atop the standings. The Seahawks closed out the year on an 11-1 run, but lost in an upset to Mount St. Mary’s in the Semifinals of the NEC Tournament.

Wagner put up a nice offensive effort in their first game of the year against Hartford in a 77-59 win. The Seahawks were up 45-28 at halftime and held off the Hawks from there. Will Martinez was the team’s top scorer with his 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Over on the VCU side, they logged a 19-7 overall record in 2020-21 with a 10-4 run in A-10 play. The Rams landed in second place in the standings, but fell to St. Bonaventure in the conference tournament championship.

VCU nearly lost a 31-23 edge at halftime in their first game of the year versus Saint Peter’s, but the Rams were able to hang on for a 57-54 win in gritty fashion. Hason Ward was the team’s top scorer with 14 points, nine rebounds and one assist to his credit.

VCU is 3-9 ATS in their last 12 after a straight-up win and 5-13 ATS in their last 18 as an underdog. The under is 11-4 in VCU’s last 15 overall.

Meanwhile, the Seahawks are 6-1 ATS in their last seven road games and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 after an ATS win. Wagner is 2-9 ATS in their last 11 Saturday games.

PICK: I’m going to try Wagner here. The Seahawks played great offensive ball in their opener, shooting 55.2 percent overall and 38.9 percent from 3-point range. Wagner was solid on the boards with 36 rebounds while collecting 17 assists and 12 steals as well.

As for VCU, they shot 41.9 percent in their opener but were out-rebounded 38-31 and hit just two of 14 3-point tries. The Rams are going to need to clean up a few things (19 turnovers) going into this second game, and I think they’ll play better. I still like Wagner on the cover, though.
