The Northwestern State Demons and the SMU Mustangs meet Monday in college basketball action from SMU Moody Coliseum. Northwestern State is 1-2 on the young season with losses to Oklahoma and Tulsa before a win over Champion Christian. As for SMU, they’re 1-1 so far following a loss to Oregon in their last outing. Northwestern State had a couple of tricky matchups to start out the season and lost them both. First was a 77-59 loss to Oklahoma last Tuesday. In game two, the Demons played better offensively but still lost to Tulsa 82-75.

Northwestern State finally got into the win column in game three with a 91-62 victory over Champion Christian. The team’s leading scorer was Kendal Coleman with 19 points and 11 rebounds. La Terrance Reed added 12 points with one rebound and one assist.

Over on the SMU side, they kicked off their season versus McNeese this week. The Mustangs scored 47 points in the second half on the way to an 86-62 win. Kendric Davis led the team with 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Game two didn’t go so well for the Mustangs against a very good Oregon team. SMU was down 50-35 at halftime and couldn’t get any closer in an 86-63 loss. Emmanuel Bandoumel was the only double-digit team scorer with 14 points, five rebounds and one assist.

SMU is 5-1-1 ATS in their last seven Monday games and 0-7 ATS in their last eight after a straight-up loss. The Mustangs are 0-4 ATS in their last four overall.

Meanwhile, the Demons are 5-1-1 ATS in their last seven Monday games and 9-3 ATS in their last 12 as an underdog. Northwestern State is 9-4-1 ATS in their last 14 road games.

PICK: I’m going to stay with SMU. The Mustangs were outmatched in their last game versus Oregon, shooting just 37.7 percent from the floor with an 39-27 rebounding deficit. That said, it was a tough matchup. SMU should look just fine in comparable matchups this season, as they’ve got a decent amount of scoring on their roster. The Mustangs should be in full control here from front to back if all goes well.
