The Southern Utah Thunderbirds and the Saint Mary’s Gaels meet Monday in college basketball action from McKeon Pavilion. Southern Utah is 1-1 so far this year and coming off a loss to Dixie State in their last appearance. As for Saint Mary’s, they’re 2-0 this season and fresh off a victory versus Texas Southern. Southern Utah had a great offensive outing against Bethesda in their first game this year, scoring 50 points in the first half and 66 more in the second during a 116-74 win. Dre Marin led the team with 20 points, and Maizen Fausett added 11 points with 14 boards.
In game two against Dixie State, the Thunderbirds began to have some issues. Southern Utah fell behind 47-30 at halftime and couldn’t make up the gap in an 83-76 loss. John Knight led the team with 20 points, seven rebounds and five assists in the defeat.
Over on the Saint Mary’s side, they kept Prairie View A&M at bay in their opener, scoring 46 in the second half on the way to an 87-68 win. Alex Ducas was the high scorer on the team with his 22 points and six rebounds.
The Gaels were able to keep it going in game two versus Texas Southern. Saint Mary’s was down 31-28 at halftime but outscored the Tigers by 12 points from there in a 67-58 win. Dan Fotu led the Gaels with his 19 points and nine rebounds.
The Gaels are 1-5 ATS in their last six after an ATS loss and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 Monday games. Saint Mary’s is 1-5 ATS in their last six overall.
Meanwhile, the Thunderbirds are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 road games and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 overall. Southern Utah is 6-0 ATS in their last six after an ATS loss.
PICK: I’m going to try Saint Mary’s in this one. The Gaels took a step back offensively in their comeback win over Texas Southern, but still got the job done. Saint Mary’s shot 41.4 percent from the field in that one with 7-of-21 from 3-point range and 36 rebounds.
As for Southern Utah, they had a bad first half in their last outing and couldn’t bridge the gap despite a few decent offensive performances. I like the Thunderbirds to look better here but I don’t trust them enough on a cover right now.
