The UC Riverside Highlanders and the San Diego Toreros meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Jenny Craig Pavilion. UC Riverside sits at 2-1 so far. The Highlanders beat La Sierra University in their last outing. As for San Diego, they’re 2-1 as well this season. The Toreros lost to California in their last game. UC Riverside couldn’t figure out San Diego State in their opener this year. The Highlanders trailed by 10 at halftime and ultimately fell 66-53. In game two things went better. UC Riverside turned a 34-32 halftime edge over Arizona State into a nice 66-65 victory.

The Highlanders kept it going with a good showing against La Sierra University in game three. UC Riverside held a 36-19 halftime edge and cruised to a 72-54 win. The team’s leading scorer was Will Tattersall with 18 points, one rebound and one assist.

Over on the San Diego side, they had an easy warmup game versus La Verne in their opener and pummeled the opposition in a 103-38 blowout victory. The winning continued in game two versus Nevada. San Diego scored 48 first-half points on the way to a 75-68 win.

San Diego was able to keep up with California initially during their last game. The Toreros had a 32-32 tie at the break but ran out of gas in the second half for a 75-70 loss. Jase Townsend was the team’s top scorer with his 16 points, four assists and three boards.

San Diego is 5-12 ATS in the last 17 after an ATS loss and 1-5 ATS in the last six overall. The Toreros are 1-5 ATS in the last six at home.
Meanwhile, the UC Riverside is 1-3-1 ATS in the last five Wednesday games and 1-6 ATS in the last seven road games. The Highlanders are 3-8 ATS in the last 11 overall.

PICK: I’m going to stay with San Diego. The Toreros have played well so far, but they were a little generous to California in their last outing. San Diego allowed 50 percent shooting from the floor and 66.7 percent from 3-point range to the Golden Bears and couldn’t keep up on the scoreboard.

As for UC Riverside, they’ve got two nice wins under their belt in their last pair, but only one was a comparable matchup. The Highlanders won’t be able to push San Diego around quite as much as they did La Sierra, so I like the Toreros better on a potential cover. Should be a fun game to watch, though.
