The Stony Brook Seawolves and the Kansas Jayhawks meet Thursday in college basketball action from Allen Fieldhouse. Stony Brook is 0-1 on the young season following a loss to George Mason in their opener. As for Kansas, they’re sitting at 2-0 so far and coming off a win over Tarleton State. Stony Brook is coming off a disappointing season last year, going 9-14 overall and 7-9 in the America East Conference. The Seawolves finished the regular season on a 1-5 run and lost to UMass Lowell 64-62 in the First Round of the America East Tournament.
In their 2021-22 season opener against George Mason, the Seawolves got off to a slow start with just 28 first-half points. It didn’t get any better from there in a 74-52 blowout loss. Leading scorer for the team was Jahlil Jenkins with 13 points and one rebound.
Over on the Kansas side, they took on Michigan State in their opener. The Jayhawks scored 39 points in the first half and 48 more in the second during an 87-74 win. Ochai Agbaji led the way on 29 points, and Remy Martin added 15 points with six boards.
Game two against Tarleton State was another win for the Jayhawks. Kansas had an eight-point halftime lead and stretched their legs in the second for an 88-62 win. Agbaji was again the leading scorer with 25 points and six rebounds.
Kansas is 1-3-1 ATS in their last five at home and 8-3-2 ATS in the last 13 overall. The Jayhawks are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 Thursday games.
Meanwhile, the Seawolves are 0-4 ATS in their last four Thursday games and 5-2 ATS in their last seven after a straight-up loss. The under is 5-0 in Stony Brook’s last five road games.
PICK: I’m going Kansas here, but probably not touching it. The Jayhawks took care of Tarleton State pretty well in their last outing, shooting a scorching 58.6 percent with 45.0 percent (9-of-20) from 3-point range. Kansas collected 41 rebounds and 23 team assists, but did have 13 turnovers and shot just 64.7 percent from the line. Stony Brook likely isn’t going to be able to keep up for long in this one, so we’re left to decide how big the win will be. I’m sticking with Kansas, but the line is probably too thick to bother with.
