The UTEP Miners and the Pacific Tigers meet Friday in college basketball action from Alex G. Spanos Center. UTEP is sitting a 2-1 so far on the young season. The Miners took out Northern New Mexico in their last outing. As for Pacific, they’re 2-2 after four games and fresh off a win over Cal State Stanislaus. UTEP opened up the year against Western New Mexico. The Miners didn’t have a whole lot of trouble in that one during an 85-57 win. Game two was a tougher matchup for UTEP. Following a five-point first half deficit, the Miners lost to New Mexico State 77-71.

UTEP got back to their winning ways in game three against Northern New Mexico. The Miners posted a nice 51-point total in the first half and cruised to the 88-53 blowout win. Jamal Bieniemy led the team with his 15 points, two rebounds and one assist.

Over on the Pacific side, their opener was a tough one. The Tigers ultimately fell 67-65 to Northern Colorado, but bounced back for an 85-74 win over Hawaii-Hilo in game two. In the Hawaii matchup, Pacific couldn’t keep the pace and fell 73-61.

The Tigers managed another win on Tuesday against Cal State Stanislaus. Pacific put up 38 points in the first half and was able to hang on for a 65-46 win. Alphonso Anderson doubled up in that one with 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Pacific is 5-2 ATS in their last seven at home and 1-7-1 ATS in their last nine Friday games. The Tigers are 1-4 ATS in their last five overall.

Meanwhile, the Miners are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 Friday games and 2-6 ATS in their last eight road games. UTEP is 6-1 ATS in their last seven overall.

PICK: I’m going to try UTEP here. The Miners took care of business in their last outing against Northern New Mexico, posting 49.3 percent shooting from the floor with 14-of-16 free throws made and a nice 41-23 rebounding advantage. It was their highest points total of the year so far (88).

As for Pacific, they were close in one of their losses this year, but the Hawaii game was a relative blowout. Still, the Tigers bounced back well and beat Stan State handily. In this matchup however, I don’t know that Pacific will be able to keep up if UTEP is scoring well.
