The Tennessee State Tigers and the South Dakota Coyotes meet Sunday in college basketball action from Sanford Coyote Sports Center. Tennessee State is 1-2 so far this year and coming off their first win over Fisk. As for South Dakota, they’re 2-1 and took out Southern by three points in their last game. Tennessee State played Alabama A&M in their first game of the year. The Tigers hung around most of the game but ultimately lost 82-73. In game two it was another defeat for the Tigers, this time 66-59 against Norfolk State.
In their third outing of the year, the Tigers finally got a win over Fisk. Tennessee State scored 58 points in the first half alone, cruising to a 111-56 victory. Top scorer was Christian Brown with 18 points, four assists and two rebounds.
Over on the South Dakota side, they opened up the year against Air Force. The Coyotes had to scramble at the end but came out on top 59-53. Game two was a comparative mess, though; South Dakota was blown out by Drake 99-50.
The Coyotes got back into that W column in their last outing versus Southern. South Dakota gave up 42 second-half points but were able to hang on for a 71-68 win. Xavier Fuller led the team with his 20 points, five rebounds and one assist.
The Coyotes are 1-4 ATS in their last five Sunday games and 1-4 ATS in their last five home games. South Dakota is 0-4 ATS in their last four overall.
Meanwhile, the Tigers are 6-1 ATS in their last seven Sunday games and 4-12 ATS in their last 16 overall. Tennessee State is 6-20 ATS in their last 26 road games.
PICK: I’m going to try South Dakota. The Coyotes shot a solid 46.8 percent from the field against Southern in their last game, out-rebounding the Jaguars 37-27. It wasn’t all great, though; South Dakota coughed up 17 turnovers with 20 fouls.
As for Tennessee State, they’ve got a couple of good offensive outings and a relative dud on their resume so far. I think the Tigers will do okay scoring-wise here in an eventual South Dakota cover.
