The Yale Bulldogs and the Southern Utah Thunderbirds meet Tuesday in college basketball action from Suncoast Credit Union Arena. Yale enters this matchup at 3-2 overall. The Bulldogs lost to Vermont in their last outing. As for Southern Utah, they’re 1-3 so far and fresh off a loss to California. Yale kicked off the season with consecutive wins over Vassar 88-42 and UMass 91-71. The Bulldogs took their first loss to Seton Hall in game three 80-44, but then bounced back with an 82-54 blowout win over Siena.
Back on Friday against Vermont, the Bulldogs had a slim 24-23 lead at the break but lost it in a 61-53 result. Yale’s top scorer was Azar Swain, the only player in double-digits with 22 points, four rebounds and two assists.
Over on the Southern Utah side, they got a nice 116-74 blowout win over Bethesda University in their opener, but it’s been downhill from there. The Thunderbirds lost their next pair to Dixie State 83-76 and Saint Mary’s 70-51.
On Thursday against California, the Bulldogs fought for two overtime periods but couldn’t get the win in a 75-68 result. John Knight led the way on 31 points with six rebounds, two assists and three steals in the loss.
Southern Utah is 3-8 ATS in their last 11 Tuesday games and 0-4 ATS in their last four overall. The Thunderbirds are 6-2 ATS in their last eight after an ATS loss.
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs are 7-2 ATS in their last nine Tuesday games and 6-1 ATS in their last seven after a straight-up loss. The over is 13-4-1 in Yale’s last 18 overall
PICK: I’m going to stick with Yale. The Bulldogs didn’t play too badly against Vermont in their last outing, but the shooting was cold on 37.5 percent from the field and just 4-of-23 from 3-point range. Yale was out-rebounded 40-35 and had 10 turnovers.
As for Southern Utah, they put up a valiant effort against Cal but came up short. I like the Thunderbirds to hang around for most of the game in this one as well, but miss out on the cover.
