The Texas Southern Tigers and the BYU Cougars meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Marriott Center. Texas Southern is 0-5 so far this year and lost to NC State in their last appearance. Texas Southern hasn’t had any luck in the win column yet this year, but the team has been close in a couple of games. The first four losses came to Oregon 83-66, Saint Mary’s 67-58, Washington 72-65 and Air Force 61-57.
On Sunday against NC State, the Tigers took another loss. Texas Southern had a 31-28 edge at halftime but could only score 26 points from there in a 65-57 loss. PJ Henry led the team with 12 points, two rebounds and one assist.
Over on the BYU side, it’s been smooth sailing so far. The Cougars took out Cleveland State 69-59 in their opener, then fought off a pesky San Diego State team for a 66-60 win. Game three was another victory, this time 81-49 over Oregon.
In the Saturday game versus Central Methodist, BYU scored 46 points in the first half and 51 more from there in a runaway 97-61 win. Caleb Lohner topped the team on 19 points with seven rebounds and two assists in just 18 minutes of work.
The Cougars are 1-4 ATS in their last five Wednesday games and 2-5-2 ATS in their last nine at home. BYU is 4-1 ATS in the last five after a straight-up win.
Meanwhile, Texas Southern is 3-8 ATS in their last 11 Wednesday games and 9-1 ATS in their last 10 road games. The Tigers are 13-3 ATS in their last 16 overall.
PICK: I’m probably going to stay with BYU in this one. The Cougars really haven’t had too many issues so far this year, and they flexed their muscles against an overmatched Central Methodist team in their last game. BYU put up 56.7 percent shooting with 37 rebounds and 24 assists in the rout. Texas Southern will serve as more of a challenge, but if the Cougars keep playing like they have I don’t think they’ll have trouble finding a cover.
