The Grand Canyon Antelopes and the Pepperdine Waves meet Saturday in college basketball action from Firestone Fieldhouse. Grand Canyon is 4-1 so far this year and coming off a win over Life Pacific. Grand Canyon kicked off the year with a 3-0 run, taking out Grambling State, North Florida and Prairie View. The Antelopes’ early-season win streak came to an end on Monday versus Wyoming with a 68-61 defeat.
In the Wednesday game versus Life Pacific, the Antelopes got back to business with an 82-47 blowout win. Grand Canyon put up 46 second-half points on the way to the victory. Jovan Blacksher led the way on 16 points with eight assists.
Over on the Pepperdine side, they went 2-4 over their first six games this year. The Waves managed victories over Idaho State 65-60 and UC Davis 72-67, but otherwise lost to Rice, Utah Valley, UC Irvine and Fresno State.
The Waves faced TCU in their most recent outing. Pepperdine fell behind 32-27 at halftime and ultimately didn’t get closer in a 73-64 loss. Jan Zidek topped the team on 17 points, and Houston Mallette added 15 points with six boards..
The Waves are 5-1 ATS in their last six at home and 17-7-1 ATS in their last 25 overall. Pepperdine is 5-2 ATS in their last seven after an ATS win.
Meanwhile, the Antelopes are 20-6 ATS in their last 26 overall and 4-0 ATS in their last four Saturday games. The under is 18-8 in Grand Canyon’s last 26 overall.
PICK: I’m probably sticking with Grand Canyon here. The Antelopes have scored pretty well so far this year, with 74 or more points in three of five games. In Grand Canyon’s lone loss against Wyoming, they really only had one bad half (26-18) and recovered reasonably well.
As for Pepperdine, they’ve had a few flashes this year but haven’t been able to put it together. The Waves were out-rebounded 38-22 by TCU in their last game as well. This should be a pretty competitive game overall but I think Grand Canyon is the better cover option.
