The UC Irvine Anteaters and the Santa Clara Broncos meet Saturday in college basketball action from Leavey Center. UC Irvine is sitting at 3-1 so far. The Anteaters beat Pepperdine in their last game. As for Santa Clara, they’re 5-1 and fresh off a loss to Fresno State. UC Irvine started off the year on a down note with a 62-51 loss to New Mexico State, but quickly got into the swing of things. The Anteaters posted a win over Boise State in game two, then took out La Verne in their next outing.
UC Irvine managed another win over Pepperdine in their last game. The Anteaters outscored the Waves 36-24 in the first half and 46-24 in the second in an 82-48 win. Dawson Baker was tops in scoring with 19 points and four rebounds.
Over on the Santa Clara side, they rolled to a 5-0 start this year through their first quintet. The Broncos’ victories came versus CSU Fullerton, Stanford, Nevada, Cal Poly and TCU to kick off the year undefeated.
Santa Clara’s winning streak came to a halt on Thursday against Fresno State. The Broncos were outscored 32-27 in the second half during a 59-52 loss. Both Keshawn Justice and PJ Pipes notched 12 points apiece with a combined nine rebounds.
The Broncos are 4-0-1 ATS in their last five at home and 4-1 ATS in their last five Saturday games. Santa Clara is 21-6 ATS in their last 27 after an ATS loss.
Meanwhile, the Anteaters are 1-4 ATS in their last five road games and 20-9-1 ATS in their last 30 Saturday games. UC Irvine is 0-4 ATS in their last four after an ATS win.
PICK: I’m going to go with Santa Clara. The Broncos need to have a good bounce-back game here, though. Santa Clara hung around pretty well against Fresno State in an intense loss during their last outing and had a 33-32 rebounding edge. The Broncos shot a tepid 36 percent from the field and had 15 total turnovers, however.
As for UC Irvine, they had a good effort against Pepperdine in their last outing and that should provide some good momentum here. I like the Anteaters to be in this one for most of the game, with Santa Clara pulling away on a cover late.
