The NJIT Highlanders and the St. John’s Red Storm meet Saturday in college basketball action from Carnesecca Arena. NJIT is sitting at 2-2 so far and coming off a win over Fairleigh Dickinson. As for St. John’s, they’re 4-1 and fresh off a win over St. Francis-Brooklyn. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.

NJIT got off to a sluggish start in their opener versus Merrimack, falling 61-54. The Highlanders bounced back with a win over Lehigh 73-56, but then fell to Rutgers 75-61 in game three. Another matchup versus Wagner was postponed.

In the Fairleigh Dickinson game, the Highlanders were able to get back to .500 on the year. NJIT scored 35 points in the first half on the way to a 62-54 win. Miles Coleman doubled up to lead the team with 17 points and 10 boards.

Over on the St. John’s side, they rolled over MS Valley State in their first game of the year with a 119-61 result. The Storm beat Saint Peter’s in game two, then fell to Indiana by two points. Game four was another win over Fairleigh Dickinson 87-74.

The Red Storm had a 40-38 deficit heading into halftime of their last outing versus St. Francis-BK. St. John’s posted a 38-30 edge from there in a 76-70 comeback win. Julian Champagnie led the team on 23 points with six rebounds and five assists.

The Storm are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 at home and 12-4 ATS in their last 16 Saturday games. St. John’s is 14-6 ATS in their last 20 overall.

Meanwhile, the Highlanders are 8-17-1 ATS in their last 26 after an ATS win and 1-4-1 ATS in their last six after a straight-up win. The over is 5-2 in NJIT’s last seven road games.

PICK: I’m going to stick with St. John’s here. The Red Storm had a spotty first half against St. Francis-BK in their last game, but eventually recovered to shoot 56.9 percent from the field. St. John’s was outgunned on the boards 40-26 and hit just three of 14 3-point tries, though.

As for NJIT, they notched 42 rebounds against Fairleigh Dickinson in their last game but shot a tepid 37 percent from the field. If St. John’s can get it together defensively here I think they’ll be fine on a cover.
