The Penn State Nittany Lions and the Oregon State Beavers meet Saturday in college basketball action from the Arena at Northwest Florida State. Penn State enters this one at 3-2 so far. The Nittany Lions lost to LSU in overtime during their last outing on Friday. As for Oregon State, they lost to Wake Forest in overtime in their Friday game as well. Penn State kicked off the year with a 75-59 win over Youngstown State, then fell to UMass 81-56. The Nittany Lions won their next pair, taking out St. Francis-BK 74-59 and Cornell 85-74 to move to 3-1 on the season.

Penn State took on LSU in their Friday matchup. The Nittany Lions were outscored 32-29 in the second half after an early lead and had to go to overtime. Penn State fell behind 10-5 from there in a 68-63 defeat. Sam Sessoms doubled up with 13 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.

Over on the Oregon State side, they started out on a 1-4 clip during their first five games this season. The Beavers beat Portland State in the opener, then lost to Iowa State, Tulsa, Samford and Princeton over the next quartet.

In Friday’s matchup versus Wake Forest, Oregon State was down 48-29 after one half but posted a 40-21 edge from there to force overtime. The Beavers couldn’t complete the comeback and lost 80-77 in a rough outcome. Rodrigue Andela put up 16 points with five rebounds to lead the team.

PICK: I’m likely going to try Penn State here. The Nittany Lions nearly toppled a good LSU team on Friday, shooting 42.9 percent from the field with 14 team assists. Penn State was a little sloppy on 16 turnovers, and LSU grabbed 17 offensive rebounds to the Lions’ eight. Still, it was a strong performance overall.

As for Oregon State, they get major credit for the big comeback against Wake Forest. The Beavers put up 46.6 percent shooting overall and had a 30-28 rebounding edge. This one should be similarly competitive, and I think Oregon State will hang around for most of the game.
