The Cornell Big Red and the Canisius Golden Griffins meet Monday in college basketball action from Koessler Athletic Center. Cornell is 5-1 so far this year. The Big Red are fresh off a win over St. Francis-PA. As for Canisius, they’re 2-4 on the season. The Griffins beat Coppin State in their last outing. Cornell kicked off their year with four straight wins. The Big Red beat Binghamton, Lafayette, Colgate and Wells College in succession to start out at 4-0. Cornell took their first loss 85-74 in the Penn State game, though.

The Big Red got back into the win column against St. Francis-PA in their last outing. Cornell was up 47-32 at halftime and didn’t give much away from there in a 93-80 win. Nazir Williams led the way on 21 points, three assists and a steal.

Over on the Canisius side, their year started out on an 0-4 skid. The Griffins lost the opener to Miami-FL 77-67, then fell to East Carolina 83-71, St. Bonaventure 69-60 and Cleveland State 80-70 before a win over Fredonia State 106-40.

In game six the Griffins got another victory, this one courtesy of Coppin State. Canisius scored 44 points in the first half and hung on for the tight 76-75 win. Armon Harried topped the team with 22 points, five rebounds and two assists.

The Griffins are 2-5 ATS in their last seven Monday games and 21-9-2 ATS in their last 32 as an underdog. The over is 9-4 in Canisius’ last 13 at home.

Meanwhile, the Red are 4-1 ATS in their last five Monday games and 4-0 ATS in their last four road games. Cornell is 6-0 ATS in their last six overall.

PICK: I’m going to stay with Cornell in this one. The Big Red have played well so far, and they’re coming off a nice performance in the St. Francis-PA game. Cornell shot 54.1 percent in that one, with 16-of-35 (45.7 percent) from 3-point range and 39 rebounds.

As for Canisius, it’s been a rough run so far. The Griffins have a couple of victories in their pockets, but really had to struggle against Coppin State in the last game. If Cornell gets going here I don’t think the Griffins can cover.
