The San Jose State Spartans and the Pepperdine Waves meet Monday in college basketball action from Firestone Fieldhouse. San Jose State is 4-3 so far this year. The Spartans beat North Dakota in their last game on Friday. As for Pepperdine, they’re 2-8 on the season and coming off a loss to UC Santa Barbara. San Jose State got off to a spotty start at 1-3, beating CSU Fullerton before losses to Stanford, Cal Baptist and Texas. The Spartans have won three straight over Northern Colorado, South Dakota and North Dakota since then.

In the North Dakota game, San Jose State turned a slim two-point halftime lead into a 76-51 win thanks to 49 second-half points. Both Trey Smith and Trey Anderson posted 17 points with a combined seven assists and 10 boards.

Over on the Pepperdine side, they started the year at 2-2 with wins over Rice and UC Davis. The Waves have since lost their last six to UC Irvine, Fresno State, TCU, Grand Canyon, Nevada and UC Santa Barbara.

Pepperdine was able to hang around in the first half versus UC Santa Barbara, pulling into the break with a 41-41 tie. The Waves faded from there in an 86-74 loss. Jan Zidek was tops with 20 points and seven rebounds.

The Waves are 6-1 ATS in their last seven home games and 11-4 ATS in the last 15 after a straight-up loss. The under is 6-1 in Pepperdine’s last seven overall.

Meanwhile, the Spartans are 6-1 ATS in their last seven overall and 16-33-2 ATS in the last 51 road games. The under is 5-1 in San Jose State’s last six road games.

PICK: I’m probably going to stay with San Jose State. The Spartans have gotten into a solid rhythm over their last three games, with 75 or more points in two of those. San Jose State shot a nice 47.6 percent in their last game, with a 44-38 rebounding advantage and 20 assists.

As for Pepperdine, they played fairly well initially during their last game but couldn’t keep up the scoring pace. The Waves have given up 70 or more points in five of their last six, and I think they’re due for another one here.
