The Villanova Wildcats and the Syracuse Orange meet Tuesday in college basketball action from Madison Square Garden. Villanova sits at 6-2 so far this year. The Wildcats are coming off a win over Saint Joseph’s. As for Syracuse, they’re 5-3 and fresh off a win over Florida State. Villanova went on a 3-1 run to start the year, with wins over Mount St. Mary’s, Howard and Tennessee. The Wildcats then lost to Purdue before victories versus La Salle, Penn and Saint Joseph’s in the next three.
In the Saint Joseph’s game, Villanova jumped out to a 34-22 halftime lead and scored 47 more points from there in an 81-52 blowout victory. Collin Gillespie was the team’s top scorer there, with 23 points, four rebounds and three assists.
Over on the Syracuse side, they hit a 2-2 run over their first four games with losses to Colgate and VCU. The Orange went 3-1 in their next four, beating Arizona State, Indiana and Florida State (with a loss to Auburn mixed in).
Back on Saturday versus Florida State, the Orange trailed 32-24 at halftime. Syracuse posted a 39-28 run from there in a 63-60 win. Both Cole Swider (16 points; 10 rebounds) and Joseph Girard (16 points; three rebounds) led the team in scoring.
The Orange are 4-0 ATS in their last four Tuesday games and 1-4 ATS in their last five after a straight-up win. The over is 7-2 in Syracuse’s last nine Tuesday games.
Meanwhile, the Wildcats are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 Tuesday games and 0-4 ATS in their last four after an ATS win. The over is 4-1 in Villanova’s last five Tuesday games.
PICK: I’m going to try Villanova in this one. The Wildcats didn’t have any issues in their last game against Saint Joseph’s, posting 52.8 percent shooting with 52 percent (13-of-25) from beyond the arc. Villanova notched a healthy 36 rebounds and 16 team assists as well.
As for Syracuse, they toughed out a gritty win over a decent Florida State team in their last outing and have three quality victories in their last four games. It’s going to take a while to shake off the Orange in this one, but I think Villanova can get there on a cover.
