The Lafayette Leopards and the Delaware Blue Hens meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Bob Carpenter Center. Lafayette is 2-6 so far this year and fresh off a tough loss to NJIT. Lafayette began the year on an 0-4 streak with losses to Syracuse, Cornell, Penn and Duke. The Leopards then beat Rutgers and Columbia, but fell in the next two games to Sacred Heart and NJIT to fall to 2-6 thus far.
In the NJIT game, Lafayette lost a 42-37 halftime edge and had to go to overtime. After two extra periods the Leopards were left with a tough 90-86 loss. Jon Brantley managed 19 points, and Neal Quinn doubled up with 15 points and 10 assists.
Over on the Delaware side, they lost to Davidson in their opener this year, but hit a four-game win streak afterwards. After losses to Oakland and Temple, the Hens took out LIU, Delaware State and UMBC in succession.
On Sunday versus UMBC, Delaware notched a 31-20 halftime lead. The Hens were able to cruise from there for a 70-60 victory. Both Keondre Kennedy and Yaw Obeng-Mensah led the team with 13 points apiece and 16 combined rebounds.
Delaware is 1-4 ATS in their last five after an ATS win and 1-4 ATS in their last five Wednesday games. The over is 9-3 in the Hens’ last 12 overall.
Meanwhile, the Leopards are 23-11-1 ATS in their last 35 road games and 3-9 ATS in their last 12 overall. Lafayette is 1-6 ATS in their last seven after an ATS loss.
PICK: I’m going to stay with Delaware here. The Hens have had a couple of stumbles over their last handful of games, but overall they’re taking care of business and scoring pretty well. Delaware shot a tepid 36.6 percent against UMBC, but still managed 70 points and collected 49 rebounds.
As for Lafayette, they’re coming off a rough loss to NJIT but the Leopards’ scoring has been improved over the last three games or so. Still, I don’t think they’ll have the gas to keep up with the Hens in this one.
