The Nicholls Colonels and the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils meet Thursday in college basketball action from Harrison Complex. Nicholls is 5-3 on the year so far and coming off a win over SW Christian. As for the Devils, they’re still 0-6. MS Valley State lost to Grand Canyon in their last game. Nicholls got off to a 3-0 start this year with wins over Northern Iowa and Carver College (twice). Since then it’s been a 2-3 run for the Colonels. Nicholls has lost to Baylor, TCU and Utah Valley while otherwise beating Cal Poly and SW Christian.

In the matchup versus Southwest Christian U, the Colonels posted 40 points in the first half and 47 more from there in an 87-58 win. Nicholls’ top scorer was Ty Gordon on 22 points, five rebounds and five assists.

Over on the MS Valley State side, it’s been a futile run at 0-6 on the season so far. In succession, the Delta Devils have lost to St. John’s, Cal Baptist, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, North Alabama and Grand Canyon over their first half-dozen outings.

MS Valley State didn’t stand much of a chance against Grand Canyon, and they fell behind 38-16 at the break. The Devils gave up 53 more points from there in a 91-44 blowout loss. Robert Carpenter led the team on 12 points and three boards.

The Devils are 2-5 ATS in their last seven home games and 1-6 ATS in their last seven Thursday games. The under is 3-0-1 in MS Valley State’s last four overall.
Meanwhile, the Colonels are 3-7-1 ATS in their last 11 road games and 4-0 ATS in their last four Thursday games. The over is 4-1 in Nicholls’ last five as a favorite.

PICK: I’m going to stay with Nicholls here. The Colonels are coming off a relatively early game, shooting 41.3 percent with 53 rebounds and 15 team assists. It was a nice break from their tougher matchups lately; Nicholls has 63 points or fewer in three of their last five.

As for MS Valley State, they haven’t found much offense to speak of. The Devils have hit 66 points or fewer in each of their six games so far—and given up 72 or more in each as well. The cover should be there for the taking if Nicholls can score at a decent pace.
