The Long Island University Sharks and San Francisco Dons meet Tuesday in college basketball action at the War Memorial at the Sobrato. The Long Island University Sharks won five games last year and enter the fifth season under coach Derek Kellogg. The San Francisco Dons won 11 games last year and enter the third season under coach Todd Golden.

The Long Island University Sharks have won double-digit games in six of the last sevens seasons. Ty Flowers returns after averaging 17.3 points and 8.1 rebounds, while Eral Penn averaged 15.9 points and 1.2 assists. Tre Wood averaged 2.1 assists per game and Alex Rivera averaged 3.1 rebounds. The Long Island University Sharks return their top-two scorers from last season and some decent depth that should lead to a proactive bounce back year. LIU has been a respectable program over the years, so you should expect a more competitive season.

The San Francisco Dons have won no less than 11 games each of the last 13 seasons. Jamaree Bouyea returns after averaging 17.3 points and 3.7 rebounds, while Khalil Shabazz averaged 15 points and 1.7 assists. Dzmitry Ryuny averaged 5.5 rebounds per game and Julian Rishwain averaged 2.9 rebounds. The San Francisco Dons have their top-four scorers returning from last season, so this has to be viewed as a dangerous team in the WCC. San Francisco also gets transfers in Yauhen Massalski, Gabe Stefanini and Patrick Tape, who will be eligible to play right away. San Francisco is a team to watch.

The Long Island University Sharks will be much better than they were a year ago, but that’s not saying much. The San Francisco Dons have been fringe contenders in the WCC, and this is a year they could take another step forward with so much returning production. This has a chance to be a special year for San Francisco. I’ll lay the expected chalk with the Dons.
