The Belmont Bruins and the SIU Edwardsville Cougars meet Monday in college basketball action from Vadalabene Center. Belmont sports a 13-4 record this year so far. The Bruins lost to Murray State on Saturday in their last game. As for SIU Edwardsville, they’re 7-8 on the season and beat Eastern Illinois in their most recent outing. Belmont hit a 5-3 run out of the gate this year with losses to Ohio, LSU and Dayton. After a win streak versus Lipscomb, Samford, Saint Louis, Chattanooga, Bethel IN, SEMO, TN-Martin and TN Tech, the Bruins lost to Murray State over the weekend.
In Saturday’s matchup versus the Racers, Belmont was outpaced 48-35 in the first half and 34-25 in the second during an 82-60 loss. Ben Sheppard topped the team with 13 points and seven rebounds. Nick Muszynski added 12 points with eight rebounds.
Over on the SIU Edwardsville side, their year began a rocky 3-6 with wins over only Knox, Youngstown State and Omaha. It’s been a 4-2 run since then, however. The Cougars have taking out Fort Wayne, UMKC, William Woods and Eastern Illinois in that time.
Matched up against Eastern Illinois back on January 13, the Cougars managed 31 points in the first half and 35 more from there in a 66-53 win. Shaun Doss was the high man in that one, notching 17 points, five rebounds and three assists.
The Cougars are 5-2 ATS in their last seven at home and 4-1 ATS in their last five overall. SIUE is 2-5 ATS in the last seven Monday games.
Meanwhile, the Bruins are 6-2 ATS in their last eight overall and 5-1-2 ATS in their last eight Monday games. The under is 4-0-1 in Belmont’s last five road games.
PICK: I’m going to try Belmont here. The Bruins are coming off a pretty listless game versus a good Murray State team, but they’d been playing well during their prior eight-game win streak. Belmont had 76 or more points in seven of those matchups. As for SIU Edwardsville, they’ve only played a couple of games so far in 2022 so it’s tough knowing what they’ll look like here. Ultimately I think Belmont pulls off the cover regardless, though.
