The Florida Gulf Coast Eagles and the Jacksonville State Gamecocks meet Saturday in college basketball action from Pete Matthews Coliseum. Florida Gulf Coast is 12-7 so far this year. The Eagles beat Stetson in overtime during their last game. As for Jacksonville State, they’re 11-6 so far and fresh off a win over Central Arkansas. Florida Gulf Coast hit a 11-4 run over their first 15 games this year. The losses in that time were to Loyola-Chicago, USC, FIU and Canisius. After losses to Jacksonville, Kennesaw State and Liberty the Eagles managed an other win over Stetson.
In Tuesday’s matchup versus Stetson, the Eagles blew a 47-32 halftime lead and had to head to overtime. When the dust settled, Florida Gulf Coast had powered out a 93-91 win. Tavian Dunn-Martin led the way on 30 points with seven assists and three steals.
Over on the Jacksonville State side, they began the year at a sketchy 5-6 in their first 11 games. The Gamecocks have since won six straight over Little Rock, Carver, North Alabama, Lipscomb, Eastern Kentucky and Central Arkansas.
Matched up against Central Arkansas on Tuesday, the Gamecocks were down 41-39 at the break. Jacksonville State posted a 47-40 edge the rest of the way for an 86-81 comeback win. Demaree King posted 20 points off the bench with four rebounds and three assists.
The Gamecocks are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 at home and 18-7 ATS in the last 25 overall. Jacksonville State is 6-1 ATS in their last seven Saturday games.
Meanwhile, the Eagles are 0-4 ATS in the last four road games and 1-5 ATS in their last six overall. Florida Gulf Coast is 6-1 ATS in their last seven Saturday games.
PICK: I’m probably going to stay with Jacksonville State. The Gamecocks have been on a nice run over this six-game win streak. They’ve hit 76 points or more in five of those, powering through a couple of close calls along the way.
As for Florida Gulf Coast, they’ve hit 74 or more points in four of their last six games, but have only gone 2-4 in that time. The Eagles may be able to keep up for a while here, but I don’t think they’ve got the legs to cover.
