The UMBC Retrievers and the Maine Black Bears meet Saturday in college basketball action from Cross Insurance Center. UMBC sits at 6-10 this year. The Retrievers lost to Albany in their last matchup. UMBC started out on a solid 5-2 clip, losing to only UMass and Longwood. It’s been a rough 1-8 run for the Retrievers since then. The losses in that time have been to Delaware, Georgetown, Princeton, UNC Greensboro, UMass Lowell, Vermont, Stony Brook and Albany.
In the Albany game Wednesday, the Retrievers scored just 28 points in the first half and 26 more from there in a 66-54 defeat. Keondre Kennedy was the leading scorer on 14 points, and Nathan Johnson chipped in 11 points with six boards.
Over on the Maine side, their year began on a 2-2 stretch. The Black Bears have won just one game since, however. In the last six, Maine has fallen to Merrimack, Rutgers, NJIT, Stony Brook, Binghamton and UMass Lowell.
In the UMass Lowell matchup Wednesday, the Bears were within three points at halftime but faded from there in a 71-62 defeat. Kristians Feierbergs was the lead scorer, doubling on 22 points and 11 boards. Make Klanjscek added 13 points and four rebounds.
Maine is 5-1 ATS in the last six overall and 1-5 ATS in the last six Saturday games. The under is 5-1 in the Bears’ last six at home.
Meanwhile, the Retrievers are 1-4 ATS in their last five road games and 1-5 ATS in the last six Saturday games. UMBC is 1-8 ATS in their last nine overall.
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on Maine here, but not going near it. The good news is that this should be a very competitive game. The bad news is that both teams are on horrible runs lately and simply not playing all that well. That said, Maine has had a couple of close games during this losing streak and they’ve posted some decent scoring totals here and there this season. A lot of different things could happen in this game, but cover-wise I’m leaning toward the Black Bears.
