The Charlotte 49ers and the Rice Owls meet Saturday in college basketball action from Tudor Fieldhouse. Charlotte is coming off a Thursday matchup versus North Texas. In that one the 49ers lost by 14 points. As for Rice, they played Old Dominion in their last appearance Thursday. The Owls ended up powering out an eight-point victory. Charlotte started out the year on a 5-5 run with losses to Toledo, Drexel, Davidson, Arkansas and Wake Forest. After wins over MD Eastern Shore, Western Carolina, UTEP and UTSA, the 49ers dropped another game to Florida Atlantic.

On Thursday versus North Texas, the 49ers were down 22-20 heading into the break. Charlotte was outscored 43-31 from there in a 65-51 loss. Tops in scoring for the 49ers was Austin Butler with 14 points and two rebounds.

Over on the Rice side, they posted a 7-5 record over their first dozen games. The losses in that time were to Houston, Oakland, Fordham, Texas State and North Texas. A 3-1 stretch came afterward; the wins were over Middle Tennessee, UAB and Marshall.

Matched up against Old Dominion on Thursday, the Owls held a slim 40-38 lead at the break. Rice posted 37 points in the second half during a solid 77-69 win. Carl Pierre was the leading team scorer with 21 points and seven boards.

Rice is 15-4-2 ATS in their last 21 at home and 3-1-1 ATS in their last five overall. The Owls are 2-6 ATS in their last eight after an ATS win.

Meanwhile, the 49ers are 4-11 ATS in their last 15 after an ATS loss and the over is 7-3 in their last 10 road games. The over is 8-2 in Charlotte’s last 10 after an ATS loss.

PICK: I’m going to stick with Rice. The Owls have played some promising basketball over their this 4-1 run despite a couple of close calls. Rice has hit 85 or more points in three of their last four games and they’re generally scoring well against comparable teams. As for Charlotte, they’ve been sketchy on the scoreboard lately with 67 or fewer points scored in each of their last four. Rice is going to need to get the offense going early here, but I think they’ll be fine on a cover.
