The San Jose State Spartans and the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels meet Saturday in college basketball action from Thomas & Mack Center. San Jose State is 7-9 on the year so far. The Spartans lost to Wyoming in their last outing. As for UNLV, they’re coming off a Thursday matchup versus Air Force. In that one the Rebels ended up losing by seven points. San Jose State posted a decent 6-4 run over the first 10 games this year with losses to Stanford, Cal Baptist, Texas and Pepperdine. The Spartans have been on a 1-5 stretch since then with losses to Santa Clara, Fresno State, Colorado State, UNLV and Wyoming in that time.

In the Wyoming matchup on Wednesday, the Spartans were outscored 45-37 in the first half and 39-32 from there in an 84-69 loss. Leading the scoring was Omari Moore with 15 points and eight assists. Shon Robinson added 14 points as well.

Over on the UNLV side, they hit a spotty 4-5 start before notching four straight wins over Seattle U, Hartford, Omaha and San Diego. After that came a 2-2 stretch with losses to San Diego State and Fresno State alongside wins over New Mexico and San Jose State.

In the Air Force game on Thursday, the Rebels posted just 25 points in the first half during an eventual 69-62 defeat. Tops in scoring was Bryce Hamilton with 31 points and seven boards. Donovan Williams added 19 points with two rebounds.

UNLV is 10-22 ATS in their last 32 overall and 1-6 ATS in their last seven Saturday games. The Rebels are 5-2 ATS in their last seven after a straight-up loss.
Meanwhile, the Spartans are 10-22 ATS in the last 32 after an ATS win and 12-29-2 ATS in their last 43 road games. San Jose State is 1-4 ATS in their last five overall.

PICK: I’m probably going to try UNLV here. The last time these teams met back on January 17, it was a blowout 81-56 win for the Rebels. UNLV shot 50 percent from the floor and won the rebounding battle 40-27 (14-8 offensive). This one may not be such a blowout, but the Rebels should be in complete control.
As for San Jose State, they’ve been in the scoring doldrums over their last four games, failing to reach 70 points in all of them (and failing to hit 60 in three of four). Offensively I don’t think the Spartans will be able to keep up for long.
