The Akron Zips and the Central Michigan Chippewas meet Tuesday in college basketball action from McGuirk Arena. Akron is sitting at 12-5 so far this year and beat Eastern Michigan over the weekend. As for Central Michigan, they’re struggling at 2-12 on the season. The Chippewas lost to Eastern Michigan in their last appearance. Akron posted a solid 9-4 run over their first 13 games this year, taking losses to Ohio State, Fordham, Appalachian State and Ohio in that time. After a loss to Kent State, the Zips took out Western Michigan, Bowling Green and Eastern Michigan.

In Saturday’s Eastern Michigan matchup, the Zips were down 29-23 at halftime. Akron posted a 23-15 advantage in the second half to pull off the 46-44 comeback victory. Leading team scorer Ali Ali finished with 15 points and two assists.

Over on the Central Michigan side, the wins have been few and far between this season. The only victories the Chippewas have were over Eastern Illinois and Kent State. Since then (amid a handful of postponements) the Chippewas have lost to Toledo and Eastern Michigan.

Back on January 11 in their last game versus Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan was outscored 46-31 in the first half and 53-37 from there in a 99-68 blowout loss. Jermaine Jackson was the top scorer on the team with 20 points and four boards.

CMU is 5-16-1 ATS in their last 22 Tuesday games and 1-4 ATS in their last five at home. The over is 10-4 in the Chippewas’ last 14 Tuesday games.
Meanwhile, the Zips are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 as a road favorite and 1-4 ATS in their last five as a favorite. The under is 5-1 in Akron’s last six road games.

PICK: I’m going to stay with Akron. Probably not going near this one, though. The Chippewas have played just two games since December 29 so it’s tough telling what they’ll do here. That said, Central Michigan has given up 69 or more points in 11 straight games, so there should be plenty of scoring opportunities for Akron in this one. The Zips have had their duds here and there this year, but they’ve scored well in comparable matchups. I think Akron will be fine on a cover in this one.
