The Syracuse Orange and the Pittsburgh Panthers meet Tuesday in college basketball action from Petersen Events Center. Syracuse is sitting at 9-10 on the season so far. The Orange lost to Duke in their last game. As for Pittsburgh, they’re 7-12 this year and lost to Clemson in their most recent outing. Syracuse began their year on a 7-5 stretch that featured losses to Colgate, VCU, Auburn, Villanova and Georgetown. It’s been a rough 2-5 run since then. The Orange have lost to Virginia, Miami, Wake Forest, Florida State and Duke.
In the Duke game on Saturday, Syracuse scored just 22 points in the first half and limped to a 79-59 blowout loss. The Orange’s top scorers were Jesse Edwards and Jimmy Boeheim, each with 12 points and a combined 12 rebounds.
Over on the Pittsburgh side, they went 5-7 over their first dozen this year with wins over UNC Wilmington, Towson, Colgate, St. John’s and Jacksonville. The Panthers are also 2-5 in their last seven with losses to Notre Dame, Louisville, Syracuse, Virginia and Clemson.
Matched up against Clemson on Saturday, the Panthers were outscored 38-27 in the first half and 37-21 from there in a 75-48 loss. Topping the team in scoring was John Hugley with 15 points, eight rebounds and a steal in 31 minutes of work.
Pitt is 1-4 ATS in their last five overall and 4-1 ATS in their last five Tuesday games. The over is 4-1 in the Panthers’ last five at home.
Meanwhile, the Orange are 6-1 ATS in their last seven Tuesday games and 5-2 ATS in the last seven after an ATS loss. The under is 4-1 in Syracuse’s last five overall.
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on Syracuse, but probably not touching this one. Both teams are struggling lately and it’s tough to know how this game will look. That said, the last time these squads met up was a 77-61 Syracuse win on January 11. The Orange shot 51 percent from the floor in that game, picking up 30 rebounds and 13 team assists along the way. Things were close until a 42-27 Orange advantage in the second half.
This rematch should be pretty close most of the way as well. I like Syracuse a little better cover-wise, but it’s anyone’s guess.
