The Nicholls State Colonels and the McNeese State Cowboys meet Thursday in college basketball action from the Legacy Center. Nicholls State is 11-9 on the season and lost to SE Louisiana in their last outing. As for McNeese State, they’re currently 8-12 this year. The Cowboys beat Incarnate Word in their most recent game. Nicholls State got off to an 8-4 start through their first 12 games this year. The Colonels then hit a 2-4 stretch that featured wins over Incarnate Word and Texas A&M. Since then it’s been a win over Northwestern State and a loss to SE Louisiana.
In Saturday’s matchup versus SE Louisiana, Nicholls State was down by just three points at the half. The Colonels couldn’t keep up on a 52-47 deficit from there in a 101-93 loss. Tops in scoring was Pierce Spencer with 18 points and five boards.
Over on the McNeese State side, they opened the year with a 5-11 run with wins over Champion Christian, Carver, St. Francis BK, Ecclesia and New Orleans. The Cowboys have won three of their last four over Arlington Baptist, Houston Baptist and Incarnate Word.
Matched up against Incarnate Word over the weekend, McNeese jumped out to a 49-28 lead by the break. The Cowboys were outscored 44-33 from there but hung on for the 82-72 win. Christian Shumate topped the team on 29 points and 11 rebounds.

PICK: I’m probably going to try McNeese here. The Cowboys have certainly been spotty this season, but over the last four games they’ve looked better. McNeese has hit 78 or more points in three of those four games, so they can score when the matchup is favorable. As for Nicholls State, they’ve scored well lately also with 69 or more points in five of their last six. I like this one to be a higher-total game, with McNeese powering out a cover. Should be a fun matchup.
