The Charlotte 49ers and the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers meet Thursday in college basketball action from Diddle Arena. Charlotte is sitting at 13-11 on the year. The 49ers lost to Middle Tennessee in their last game. As for Western Kentucky, they’re 15-11 so far and coming off a win over Southern Miss. Charlotte got off to a decent 9-5 start this year, but things have been pretty shaky since then. The 49ers are 2-4 in their last half-dozen games. The losses in that time have come to Old Dominion, Western Kentucky, LA Tech and Middle Tennessee.
Matched up against Middle Tennessee back on Sunday, the 49ers went into the break down 34-41. Charlotte couldn’t get any closer from there and lost 78-63. Jahmir Young was the leading scorer on 26 points with two rebounds.
Over on the Western Kentucky side, their year began at a reasonable 10-6 overall. The Hilltoppers then hit a five-game losing streak in January. Since then it’s been wins over Charlotte, Old Dominion, FAU, UTSA and Southern Miss.
In the Southern Miss game back on Monday, the Hilltoppers scored 46 points in the first half and 41 more from there in an 87-77 victory. Dayvion McKnight led the team with his 26 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
The Hilltoppers are 3-1-1 ATS in their last five Thursday games and 1-3-1 ATS in their last five after an ATS loss. The over is 7-3 in WKU’s last 10 as a favorite.
Meanwhile, the 49ers are 2-6-1 ATS in their last nine Thursday games and 27-57 ATS in their last 84 road games. The over is 4-0 in Charlotte’s last four overall.
PICK: I’m going to stay with Western Kentucky here. The Hilltoppers are rolling along nicely over this five-game win streak. They’ve hit 71 or more points in each of the five games, holding opponents to below 70 points in four of them.
As for Charlotte, they lost 78-59 the last time these teams met up back on February 3. The 49ers have scored fairly well lately and should be able to hang around for most of the game here, though.
