The Morehead State Eagles and the SIU Edwardsville Cougars meet Saturday in college basketball action from Vadalabene Center. Morehead State is fresh off a Thursday game versus Eastern Illinois. In that matchup, the Eagles managed a blowout win. As for SIU Edwardsville, they played Austin Peay on Thursday. The Cougars ended up losing by four in overtime. Morehead State hit a sketchy 6-5 run to start the year. The Eagles bounced back with a 13-1 run from there, however. Following losses to Belmont and Murray State, Morehead State beat UT Martin before another loss to Southeast Missouri State.
In the Thursday game versus Eastern Illinois, the Eagles posted a 33-22 edge in the first half and a 49-24 run in the second on the way to a nice 82-46 victory. Tops in scoring was Johni Broome with 18 points and nine rebounds.
Over on the SIU Edwardsville side, they were 7-8 back in mid-January before a nine-game losing streak. The Cougars would go 3-2 in their next five with victories over UT Martin, Tennessee Tech and Eastern Illinois in that quintet.
Matched up against Austin Peay on Thursday, the Cougars were down by 14 points by halftime but fought back to force an extra period. After overtime SIUE had a loss 68-64. Courtney Carter was the leading scorer on his 21 points and five assists.
The Cougars are 4-1-1 ATS in their last six Saturday games and 9-4-1 ATS in their last 14 after an ATS loss. The under is 7-2 in SIU Edwardsville’s last nine overall.
Meanwhile, the Eagles are 1-4 ATS in their last five after an ATS win and 2-5-1 ATS in their last eight after a straight-up win. Morehead State is 1-5 ATS in their last six Saturday games.
PICK: I’m going to stay with Morehead State here. The Eagles have had some sketchy games against tough teams lately, but they’re still doing very well against comparable opponents. The last time these teams met up, Morehead State managed a 77-74 win back on January 22. The Cougars have been in a scoring rut lately with 66 or fewer points in five straight games. If that trend continues, Morehead State shouldn’t have a ton of issues covering in this one.
