Sam Houston State vs Tarleton State 3/3/22 College Basketball Picks, Predictions, Odds

The Tarleton State Texans and the Sam Houston Bearkats meet Thursday in college basketball action from Johnson Coliseum. Tarleton State is 14-15 on the season and coming off a win versus Lamar. Tarleton State has certainly had their ups and downs this year. The Texans have been fighting to get back above .500 for quite some time and haven’t quite pulled it off yet. The good news is that Tarleton has won three straight versus Chicago State, UTRGV and Lamar. 

Matched up against Lamar on Saturday, the Texans took a 31-20 advantage into halftime. Tarleton State was outscored 26-29 in the second but held on for the 57-49 win. Freddy Hicks was tops on 22 points with five assists and five boards.

Over on the Sam Houston side, they started out a shaky 4-8 this year, but would lose just three games from December 21 to February 19. The Bearkats have lost the handle over their last two outings, losing to both Stephen F. Austin and Grand Canyon. 

On Saturday versus Grand Canyon, the Bearkats had a 22-35 deficit going into the second half. Sam Houston scored just 19 points from there and lost a rough one 67-41. Savion Flagg managed to get a team-high seven boards with seven points. 

The Bearkats are 5-0 ATS in their last five Thursday games and 7-1 ATS in their last eight after an ATS loss. Sam Houston is 10-3-1 ATS in their last 14 overall. 

Meanwhile, the Texans are 2-6 ATS in their last eight after an ATS loss and 3-9 ATS in their last 12 overall. The over is 6-1-1 in Tarleton’s last eight road games. 

PICK: I’m going to take a stab on Tarleton here. You could probably make a good case either way, though; we should have a pretty solid matchup on our hands. The Texans are playing well lately on this 6-2 run. They’ve scored more than 75 points just twice in that time, though; the team is relying on defense to pull out the lower-scoring victories. 

The last time these teams saw each other, Tarleton State posted a 75-64 win back on January 6. I like Sam Houston to bounce back from their last game and put up a good effort here, but I like the Texans better cover-wise. Should be a fun one to watch.
