The American Eagles and the Navy Midshipmen meet in college basketball action from the Alumni Hall on Thursday night.

The American Eagles booked their spot in the quarterfinals with a 69-63 win over Holy Cross in the first round. Stacy Beckton Jr. leads the Eagles in scoring with 13.7 PPG and 4.6 RPG and Colin Smalls has 10.7 PPG as the only other double-digit scorer for American this season. Matt Rogers is also chipping in 9.4 PPG and a team-high 4.8 RPG for American on the year. As a team, American is averaging 63.3 PPG on 44.9% shooting from the field, 32.8% from three and 68.6% from the foul line while allowing 71.2 PPG on 47.6% shooting from the field and 34.8% from three this season.

The Navy Midshipmen come into the conference tournament as the #2 seed after finishing the regular season with a record of 19-10, including a 12-6 mark in conference play. John Carter Jr. leads the Middies in scoring with 12.9 PPG along with 4.3 RPG while Greg Summers has team-highs of 4.7 RPG and 2.3 APG to lead the Midshipmen on the glass and in assists this season. Tyler Nelson has 8.8 PPG with 4.6 RPG as well this season. As a team, Navy is averaging 64.3 PPG on 43.1% shooting from the field, 32.9% from three and 64.9% from the foul line while allowing 58.8 PPG on 40.1% shooting from the field and 31.5% from three this season.

American is 3-10 ATS in their last 13 games against a team with a winning record and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall while the under is 5-0 in their last 5 games against a team with a winning record. Navy is 1-6 ATS in their last 7 home games and 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games following a loss while the under is 6-0 in their last 6 games against a team with a losing record.

I get the case to be made for Navy here as the Middies are the better team in this one. However, the recent form of both teams would suggest that this is a spot where Navy wins but American covers as the Eagles have done a good job covering numbers as of late and the Middies have struggled to cover the numbers when laying points. I’ll side with American and the points in this one.
