The College of Charleston Cougars and the Hofstra Pride meet Sunday in CAA Tournament college basketball action from Entertainment & Sports Arena. Charleston is 16-14 on the year. As for the Pride, they’re sitting at 21-10 so far. This game will be a rematch of Monday’s outing featuring these teams. Hofstra won that one by five points. Charleston started off on a pretty good clip at 9-5, but a 1-4 run followed and they’ve been fighting off .500 ever since. The Cougars are 2-2 in their last four, beating Northeastern and Delaware before losses to Drexel and Hofstra.
In the Monday games versus Hofstra, the Cougars went into halftime with an 11-point deficit. Charleston scored 53 points from there but still lost 89-84. Ben Burnham and Reyne Smith each put up 19 points, and Burnham doubled with 13 rebounds.
Over on the Hofstra side, they started the year at just 1-4 but they’ve only lost consecutive games once since then. The Pride’s most recent loss was to Elon on February 24. Since then they’ve taken out William & Mary and Charleston.
Matched up against the Cougars on Monday, Hofstra scored 42 in the first half and 47 more in the second during the victory. Aaron Estrada led the team on 28 points, six rebounds and seven assists. Omar Silverio added 19 points with five boards.
The Pride are 7-1 ATS in their last eight neutral-site games and 0-4 ATS in their last four overall. Hofstra is 4-1 ATS in their last five Sunday games.
Meanwhile, the Cougars are 1-3-2 ATS in their last six neutral-site games and 4-0 ATS in their last four after an ATS win. Charleston is 5-0 ATS in their last five overall.
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on Charleston here. The Cougars’ recent 2-4 record doesn’t look that great, but they’ve been competitive lately. Charleston’s last three losses have each come by five points or fewer, and they gave Hofstra a run for their money in both games this year. Charleston lost 76-73 on January 27 and 89-84 in the Monday game.
Hofstra has been playing solid basketball themselves lately (outside of the Elon game), but I think Charleston can keep the pace going on the way to a cover here.
